How Do I Make a QR Code for My Instagram Profile?

Instagram makes one for you: open your profile, go to the QR code option and save it. Use a dynamic code instead if you print it or want scan counts.

Instagram already makes a QR code for your profile. Open your profile, go to the QR code option, pick a colour and save or share the image. Anyone who scans it lands on your profile. If you’re printing the code on flyers, packaging or a shop window, or you want to count scans, make your own dynamic QR code that points to your profile link instead.

Option 1: Use Instagram’s built-in QR code

From Instagram’s Help Center: “You can share a QR code of your Instagram profile to help other people easily find it. You can also customize your QR code.”

On a computer, the steps are:

  1. Click your profile picture on the left to go to your profile.
  2. Click Settings at the top, then click QR code.
  3. To customize it, click the circle with the colour you want.
  4. Save the image or share it.

In the app, the QR code option sits in your profile’s menu. Menu labels move between app versions. If you can’t find it, the same Help Center page has separate instructions for the Android app, iPhone app, iPad app, computer and mobile browser.

The Help Center also notes, “You can’t log in to Instagram with a QR code.” This code only sends people to your profile.

It scans with a normal phone camera

Instagram’s first version of this was Nametags, launched in 2018. Social Media Today reported that Nametag codes could only be scanned through Instagram’s own camera. In August 2020, Instagram replaced them with standard QR codes. TNW’s coverage from August 19, 2020 says the new codes “can be scanned by any camera app which supports generic QR codes,” including the stock cameras on iPhones and Pixels. Instagram had trialled the feature in Japan in 2019.

A customer doesn’t need to open Instagram first. They point the camera and tap the link.

Inside Instagram, scanning someone else’s profile code works on Android, iPhone and iPad, but not on computers.

  1. Copy your profile link. It’s instagram.com followed by your username.
  2. Open the link in a phone browser and check it opens the right profile. Typos in usernames are common, especially with dots and underscores.
  3. Paste the link into a QR generator as the destination. Choose a dynamic code if you want to count scans or change the link later. Dynamic vs static QR codes explains the difference.
  4. Download an SVG for print.
  5. Print a test copy at real size and scan it with an iPhone and an Android phone.

You can do steps 3 and 4 in the dynamic QR code generator.

Why I’d use a dynamic code for anything printed

For a story, a slide or a quick share with a friend, Instagram’s own code is the right tool. It’s free, already branded, and two taps away. Anything that goes on paper or a product should get a dynamic code in front of the profile link.

Usernames change. Instagram’s profile help page shows you change your username from Edit Profile, the same place you change your bio. Businesses rebrand. Creators shorten their handle. A code that holds the profile link directly keeps pointing at the old username, and if it’s on a thousand coffee cups, that’s a reprint. With a dynamic code you update the destination once and every printed code follows. Changing a QR code’s destination after printing walks through how that works.

You can count scans. Instagram’s code goes straight to your profile, so nothing in between records a scan. A dynamic code counts every scan. Say a café puts one code on the counter and another on its takeaway bags. Both point to the same profile, and the scan counts show which spot people use. How to track QR code scans covers what those numbers can and can’t tell you.

The limitation

Scans aren’t follows. A scan count tells you how many people opened your profile from the code, not how many followed you. You still have to check it against follower growth in Instagram’s own insights.

A dynamic code also adds a redirect. With QRAnalytica, dynamic codes run through QRAnalytica’s redirect servers, which is what makes editing and scan counts possible. Codes keep working if your subscription or trial ends, but that’s one more service between the customer and your profile. Instagram’s own code has no middle step.

Printing tips

  • Leave white space around the code. DENSO WAVE, which invented the QR code, says “QR Code requires a four-module wide margin at all sides of a symbol.” Instagram’s coloured backgrounds and your own design elements should stay out of that margin.
  • Contrast. Pale colours on white scan worse than dark on light, so be careful with Instagram’s colour options.
  • Give a reason to scan. “Follow us for the daily specials” beats the Instagram logo alone.
  • Scan the real print. If it fails, QR code not scanning? covers the usual causes.

FAQ

Does Instagram have its own QR code for my profile?

Yes. Instagram can show a QR code for your profile that other people scan to find you, and you can change its colour. Its Help Center has steps for Android, iPhone, iPad, computer and mobile browser.

Can people scan my Instagram QR code with their normal camera?

Yes. Since Instagram moved from Nametags to standard QR codes in 2020, the codes can be read by any camera app that supports regular QR codes, including the built-in iPhone and Android cameras.

Can I see how many people scanned my Instagram QR code?

Not with Instagram’s own code. It points straight at your profile, so nothing in between counts scans. A dynamic QR code that redirects to your profile can count them.

What happens to my Instagram QR code if I change my username?

A code made from your profile link points at the old username, so it can break once the name changes. A dynamic code lets you update the link without reprinting.

Can I log in to Instagram with a QR code?

No. Instagram’s Help Center says you can’t log in to Instagram with a QR code. The profile QR code only helps people find your profile.
