How Do I Make a QR Code for a Spotify Song or Playlist?

Make a Spotify QR code by copying the song or playlist link from Share and pasting it into a QR generator, or show a Spotify Code from the share sheet.

To make a Spotify QR code, open the song or playlist, tap the three dots, choose Share, copy the link, and paste it into any QR code generator. That gives you a square code every phone camera can read. If everyone scanning it already uses Spotify, you can instead tap Show Spotify Code in the same share sheet.

Spotify Code or QR code: which should you use?

A Spotify Code is Spotify’s own scannable bar design, and a QR code is the standard square pattern any camera reads. The Spotify Codes site sets rules for its format.

My take: anything printed for strangers should be a QR code. A poster in a café gets scanned by people who never open the Spotify search tab. Save the Spotify Code for a party invite or a wedding table card, where every guest already uses the app.

A Spotify QR code takes four steps: copy the share link, paste it into a generator, download, and test.

  1. Copy the link. On your phone, go to the song, album or playlist and tap the three dots. Choose Share, then copy the link. On a computer, right-click it, choose Share, then Copy Link, as described on Spotify’s share help page.
  2. Paste it into a QR generator. Choose a plain URL code, and pick static or dynamic now (see below).
  3. Download a print file. Pick SVG for print so the code stays sharp at any size. PNG works for screens and social posts.
  4. Scan the code with two phones. Use one iPhone and one Android if you can. Confirm it opens the right track, not just the artist page.

Copy the regular link, not the URI. The link is a normal web address, so it works for someone without the app. The URI means nothing outside Spotify.

How to make a Spotify Code instead

A Spotify Code comes straight from the share sheet in the Spotify app. Spotify’s help page says to open the item, tap Share, and select Show Spotify Code at the bottom. You can screenshot it from there.

For print, use the generator at spotifycodes.com, which needs the Spotify URI rather than the link:

  1. On a computer, open Share and hold ALT (Windows) or Option (Mac). The copy option switches to the Spotify URI.
  2. Paste the URI into spotifycodes.com.
  3. Pick a background colour (hex codes work) and white or black bars.
  4. Choose a size from 320px up to 1960px and a format: SVG, PNG or JPEG.

Help Desk Geek’s walkthrough follows the same route with screenshots. Spotify’s artist help page calls these codes unique, scannable links that take people straight to the song, album or artist profile.

How do people scan each type?

People scan a QR code with the normal camera app, and a Spotify Code only through Spotify itself. To read a Spotify Code, Spotify’s help page says to go to Search, tap the search bar, tap the camera icon and then SCAN. The app needs camera access to do it.

So a table card needs a line like “Open Spotify, tap Search, then the camera” next to a Spotify Code. A QR code needs only “Scan to play.” For wording that gets people to act, see how to write a QR code call to action.

Spotify codes of both kinds fail in print for the same reasons: they’re too small, too low in contrast, or too busy around the edges.

  • Size up, then shrink. The Spotify Codes site says there’s no fixed minimum size, but start from a high resolution file and scale it down.
  • Keep the rectangle clear. A Spotify Code needs a distinct rectangle that stands out from the design around it.
  • The in-app camera doesn’t zoom. A small Spotify Code on a far-away wall won’t scan.
  • Test at the final print size. Print one copy at actual size and scan it before you order a batch.

For QR codes, our guide to QR code size for printing covers distance and minimum dimensions.

Can you change the playlist or track scans later?

You can change the destination or count scans only with a dynamic QR code. A Spotify Code and a static QR code both point to one fixed item forever. Spotify’s FAQ confirms that Spotify Codes have no scan tracking.

Static codes hold up better than you’d expect for playlists. Spotify says renaming a playlist is fine as long as the URI doesn’t change. Print a static code for “Our Summer Playlist,” keep swapping songs inside it, and the code still works.

A dynamic code points to a short redirect link you can edit after printing. In QRAnalytica, you can change the target URL at any time without reprinting, and the dashboard shows scans by city, country, device and time of day. Make one with the dynamic QR code generator, or read dynamic vs static QR codes for the tradeoff.

One real limitation: a dynamic code works only while the redirect service is up. Every scan passes through QRAnalytica’s servers before it reaches Spotify. For a one-off party invite, use a static code and keep nothing in between.

Common mistakes with Spotify QR codes

Most broken Spotify QR codes come down to a wrong link or a deleted playlist.

  • Sharing a private or deleted playlist. If you delete the playlist, every printed code that points to it is dead.
  • Copying the artist page instead of the track. Tapping Share on the artist name gives you the profile, not the song.
  • A Spotify Code on products you sell. The Spotify Codes FAQ says that breaks its terms. Yearbooks are allowed only for playlists.
  • Expecting a Spotify Code to open a web page. It opens only Spotify content.

As of November 2026, link tools such as Bitly also point out that a Spotify Code and a QR code are different formats. If the same song goes on a YouTube card too, the steps in making a QR code for a YouTube video are almost identical.

FAQ

Can a normal phone camera scan a Spotify Code?

Not reliably. The Spotify Codes site says the codes can only be read from the scanner inside the Spotify app. If your audience might not open Spotify first, use a standard QR code made from the share link.

Can I see how many people scanned my Spotify Code?

No. The Spotify Codes FAQ says tracking is not available at this time. To count scans, put the Spotify link behind a dynamic QR code that records each scan.

Can I put a Spotify Code on merch I sell?

The Spotify Codes FAQ says using a code on goods, products or merch for sale violates its terms. A plain QR code that opens your Spotify link is the usual workaround, but check the terms of whatever you print.

Will my code break if I rename the playlist?

No. Spotify says renaming a playlist is fine as long as the URI does not change. Deleting the playlist or swapping in a different one is what breaks a static code.
